The Kiosk - Fremantle
Nothing to fault here for a Saturday afternoon snack. We were late but despite this we were welcomed and there were ample choices. We had a fab table outside with a great view while we enjoyed milkshakes, veggie aranchini, veggie slice, a toasted focaccia and a Caesar salad. A lovely way to spend some time on Saturday afternoon. |
Floyds - Subiaco
Yum yum yum yum yum! And great service and a fresh atmosphere. Yum! The food and coffee were great. I had beans (yum) and eggs in a tomato and capsicum sauce. He had a toasty (I've forgotten what it was, but it was yum!). My only complaint was the slight smell of car fumes from stopped traffic but that's hardly their fault. |
Millhouse Restaurant and Coffee Shop
We called in here for coffee and a light lunch. The place was very quiet, probably because of the pouring rain and we were there after the markets closed. Despite this they were unable to do a bacon and egg sandwich for him because the breakfast menu had finished and they were too busy to cook two menus (!). So we ordered toasties (very nice) and scones with jam and cream (also very nice). Unfortunately, the hot scones came out first so we had a back-to-front lunch. An interesting stop, with a pleasant bite to eat, nice and cheap. |
Back Beach Cafe - Bunbury
After dolphin watching for a while we built up an appetite for more dolphins and some good food so we headed for the beach in the hope this cafe would fit the bill. It certainly did with a great view north, south and west, dolphins swimming by and fresh food. I wish these new owners every success and can't imagine that they won't have a thriving business in the future. Support local people and give this a go if you're in Bunbury. |
Wellington Forrest Food, Wine and Cottages
With hunger getting the best of us on our Friday jaunt around the Ferguson Valley we looked for the next available and likely place for a late lunch. Fortunately we came across the road sign to this delightful place where we were treated to a great couple of hours. Wendy the cook made us delicious food while we drank a local wine from the Henty vineyard and chatted to the hostess about the history of the cottages and surrounding areas. I can't recommend this place highly enough for their service, the quality and price of the food (check out the apple pie in the pics below), the atmosphere and the general experience. |
The Lavender Valley Farm
First to review (FTR) this place. I can't really understand why. It's a great spot and I'm sure others know it. There were certainly plenty of people to suggest so, despite being in the middle of nowhere. We arrived for a very late lunch after some serious treasure hunting. Of course the all important coffee was ordered along with lunch and hit the spot. We had an open steak sandwich (me), chicken with gruyere and spring onions (him) and creamy chicken with rice (mister 12). Everything was fabulous and we followed it all with chocolate cheesecake (it's Easter) and more coffee. The service was friendly and the atmosphere is nice with a great view. If you're in the area, or not, give it a go ... |
Cafe Luxxe
We tried this place for lunch today and have no complaints at all. The venue is modern and bright. The service was very friendly and amenable, and our choice was ordered quickly and served promptly. The coffee was good (me) or so-so (him). There's that taste buds thing again. The food was tasty and good serve sizes, reasonably priced. He had pastrami, eggs and a tasty tomato sauce while I had bacon and feta bruschetta with a poached egg. Give it a go. |
Harvest Espresso
I am not sure what all the fuss is about. We had lunch here last Friday and it was nothing special. Two poached eggs with toast for each of us, with a side of bacon (they misheard the order so we only got one side initially). Coffee of course. The eggs and toast were literally that and no more. The coffee was good but not exceptional. The service was fair and the food was on the table fast enough. I personally wouldn't bother to go again but perhaps we got them on a bad afternoon. No pictures, as two poached eggs with toast on a plain white plate isn't hard to imagine ... |
Feast Cafe
Can't say I was as impressed as everyone else. We tried this place for lunch on Monday at 1.30 but the kitchen was closed! The salads and other things in the display were available which were really very nice. I had a Vietnamese chicken salad and he had a lamb layered pie with a tossed roast veg salad. Coffee of course which was good and we shared a salted caramel and chocolate slice. But it's the little things that make a difference. The service was indifferent, the place was empty and lacked any vibe and our slice to share came with one fork. Not huge but they make a difference to the experience. In a place with lots of options, longevity may be an issue for this cafe. |
Solstice Cafe
We had an early lunch to fit around meetings so the place was quiet but filling up as we left. There's lots of room and lots of parking so a crowd would fit in ok. Coffee was quick and hot and a nice blend. The menu was very limited but they don't apologise for that. In fact it's part of their message. He had the breaky burger with a sweet tooth juice (strawberry, pineapple and orange) and I had my fave eggs benedict with bacon on very nice rye bread. The service was friendly and fast. We were in and out in 40 minutes. Good job guys! |
Woodpeckers
This was an impromptu coffee that turned into lunch for two. I walk past here all the time but today I checked the menu. And there it was ... Coffee! All I wanted for lunch was a sandwich and they have those too. I had chicken schnitzel sourdough toasty that was nice but nothing overly special. He had a raspberry jam crepe The coffee was ok but I'm not overly fond of the blend. I've had it elsewhere and didn't like it then either. Having said that, he enjoyed it. Different taste buds. We're both happy we can go back there, for dinner and try a pizza. They looked fabulous and are their signature dish. Definitely give this a place a try. |
Pearfect pantry
This is a really interesting place. I have no idea why it is where it is, set amongst high density apartment living, along a path that winds amongst the blocks. It's almost like you are going to a communal outbuilding. Once you find it, it's like any other cafe except its surrounded by apartments and colourbond fencing. Don't let this put you off, you can sit inside. Now the important stuff. The coffee is excellent and the food is very good. I had a chicken wrap and he had and chrorizo lasagna. We couldn't fault either. The service was very quick, putting other far more popular places to shame. This is worth looking for - just spot the sandwich board and follow the directions. If you think you've gone wrong, you're in the right place |
Hylin - West Leederville
4.5/5 This little gem is walking distance from work and worthy of the effort. Despite a very limited space and not many small tables we managed to find a posi and took a seat in what is an industrial feeling space. The menu is varied between all day breaky and some light lunch options. I had the Spanish beans (no one will be surprised) and he had the open breaky burger. Both were sensational. Mine was tasty, exciting to eat and incredibly well presented. His was unusual but very enjoyable. We both found the coffee quiet bitter though, hence the 4.5. Make sure you give this place a go though. |

Ajino Tokeidai - Kutchan, Japan
The Piper, The Newby and I headed here for lunch after our shopping expedition. We flunked this one and scored a meal to rival the one we had at the noodle restaurant in Niseko. The piper had the children's meal, complete with a bib and a savoury dessert (yet another quirky Japanese touch). The Newby and I had a fried rice to rival Wangs and a ramen dish chosen from the non-English menu. The waitress appeared concerned for us but we made great choices and had ample food. The Piper completed his meal with an ice cream served on a stand, colour coded with his hair and neck brace. All in all a really fun experience topped off with another uniquely Japanese experience, mouth wash in the bathroom for guest use as needed. What a nice little touch. |
The Hut - Hirafu, Niseko, Japan
My first experience of hot sake was here, on top of a snow mountain, in freezing conditions after a "gondora" ride into the sky. The food menu here comprises noodles and rice and once again The Newby and I shared dishes to maximise the taste experience. This has proven to be a great tactic and we've managed to try a lot of everything. Our food adventures in and around Nesiko have been dominated by big serves and excellent options. Fortunately there are sufficient western options for The Piper who has chosen chips, chicken and cheese rings on more than one occasion. Anyway, the highlight of this food adventure was actually the drink. I could easily acquire a taste for sake in Japan just as I loved a Pisco Sour in Peru. |
Nook - Annapuri, Niseko, Japan
New Year's Day 2016 The skiers skied over from home at Hirafu and the rest of us headed over on the bus. This was the meeting place and proved to be the place we spent a big part of the day. The food here was really good, cheap and yummy but the system took a bit of working. We had dumplings followed by a noodle dish on a sizzling plate and a hearty beef stew with rice. And two sets of cutlery. The process was to stand in a queue awaiting access to the screen to tap in your order. Following this process tiny tickets are issued, one for each dish or drink ordered, with their own numbers. The sign clearly states that you take these tickets (actually just one half of them) to the counter and then the food is called out (and you redeem it with the other half of the ticket). We however neglected to pay any attention to the sign. We sat with our tickets at the table and wondered why our food was taking so long. A kindly Japanese gentleman fortunately noticed the error of our ways and approached us to instruct us on what to do. Eventually we ate! Good things come to those who wait. Later ... Back in to wait for the kids and skiers so we enjoyed a "warm wine". Very nice complimented by a lovely view. This is the way to have a good time on a ski field! |
Montys - Hirafu, Niseko, Japan
Thursday 31st - lunch Looking for a lunch spot to warm up we headed here, for no good reason. We found more coffee (not as good as the morning one at Tanta-An). Lunch was good. The Besty had a beautiful pumpkin and ginger soup while we had bacon and cheese baguettes. The bacon is hand sliced and resembled steeky bacon but in thick slabs. A yummy experience, warm and comfy with great service. |
Little Rock Cafe, North Rocks, Sydenee
4/5 Christmas shopping makes me hungry! We checked in here for a very late lunch, about 3 o'clock. I ordered breakfast (as you do at 3pm) and mum had chicken risotto. Both were good, big portions, and served hot and quick. As we were paying, the owner of the business, Paul, came and shared some lovely overproof Christmas cheer with us and had a chat. I think he fancied mum! The, just when you think Sydney is a big place, it seems I may have nursed him many years ago. Merry Christmas to all at Little Rock Cafe. |
London Court Cafe, Perth
3.5/5 We met up here for a coffee and ended up ordering lunch too. The place is very busy so tables are really squishy inside or directly in the mall traffic outside. Lucky we like each other! The coffee was ok. Nothing spesh and I've certainly had worse. He ordered pancakes and I had eggs on toast. Hard to get that wrong. Which one of us has the sweet tooth? |
Lavoro, Rockingham
4/5 Just the thing needed after a paddle to Penguin Island this morning. With our light lunch we had extra chippies and coffee (of course). The location is great, opposite the water, and the service is excellent. A lovely place to spend an hour over lunch on a Sunday. |
My wordy lordy this is a gem of a place. We were tipped off by the costume shop on Canning Hwy so we thought we'd give it a go for lunch today. What a find! The all day breakfast menu is exactly what he likes and I had serious egg envy But the BRAT (bacon, rocket, avo and tomato) that I had was fantastic. Our coffee was perfect too. I can't wait to go back and try their breakfast! #littlebanksia @littlebanksia

Taylors Art and Craft Coffee House - Middle Swan
6th December 3/5 This place is trying hard to have a thrown together look on a ramshackle property. It barely convinces me. Perhaps it looks less grim on a sunny, bright day. The burger was very nice. |
The Ingredient Tree - Wembly
30th November 2015 4.5/5 Yum yum yum! We've been here a few times and always been happy happy happy. Today was no exception. We were seated quickly and with choice - inside or outside, table or breaky bar? No ordering at the counter or paying before you know what you're getting in this place either. You do run the risk of getting food envy though, so choose carefully. No refund is given for wishing you had ordered something else. Today I had Brazilian beans with farofa and a fresh salsa, with a side of corn chips. He had #veraseggs (yes they have a Twitter hashtag) with a tasty feta. I must admit I didn't have food envy but I think he did! My meal was fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. Sorry no pic. I just dived in and ate it! Our coffee was great too and so we paid for our meal and off we went. If I have a criticism it would the need for a wee cushion on the seat but making folk to comfy may clog the place up! Enjoy! |
Southern Start Cafe Vietnamese - Perth
27th November 2015 4.5/5 There's not much wrong with this place. It's open and bright, with a view of the river, not too crowded, with friendly service and very good food. The lunch price is extremely reasonable for a dine in place. We enjoyed a tasty steamed chicken with salad and rice (a light and fresh meal) and pad Thai noodles (tasty with plenty of chicken and prawns). My only criticism would be that our food came out about 5 minutes apart (I noticed this happened on the table beside us too). Give it a go ... |
The Wolf, the Bean, the Walnut - Perth CBD
24th November 2015 3.5/5 So this was the back up after the failed attempt at The Secret Garden Cafe. Rating overall is average but the coffee was 5 out of 5. The bagel was ok but a bit salty. I've been thirsty all afternoon. I think they try to cater to the veggie / paleo / kale crowd which is fine. Except this crowd also tend to be environmentally conscious so they might not like the polystyrene trays and plastic bowls that food is served in. I get it, no washing up, but I think they're leaving a footprint. Otherwise the place is cool, has the contemporary vibe and friendly, quick service. |
The Secret Garden Cafe - Perth CBD
24th November 1/5 I can't comment on the food because we didn't eat there! We found a cute table, the waitress wiped it, we scored a menu, decided on our lunch and went to order, only to be told the wait would be 40 minutes. For a week day lunch? Who has that much time? I've been told to go easy because the food is good so I'll reserve all judgement til next time. When we can get the time to sit and wait ... Perhaps fewer tables and / or more staff might help???? |
Sprolo - South Perth
23rd November 2015 5/5 Sometimes a good veneer hides imperfections but not at Sprolo. My sfw tasted as fine as it looked and our lunch was super tasty. The service in Sprolo is fast and friendly and the atmosphere is contemporary. I especially like the space. No shoulder to shoulder with the next coffee lover! Full marks for these guys. |
The Sparrows Nest - East Victoria Park
20th November 2015 5/5 Can't fault a thing about this place. Fabulous service. Fresh food choices. Good coffee and a trendy feel to the decor. Shame we're trying to go somewhere different each time cause i love this place . Just go! |
Manic Espresso - Como
3.5/5 Nice and local with good service and a reasonable menu. Comfortable options for seating. You can lounge or eat at a table inside or out. Good luck to Ann as the business grows. |
The Monkey Puzzle - Subiaco
17th November 2015 2/5 Looks funky and contemporary but this was a bit of a disappointment for Subi. The lasagne was dry and cold in the middle and the chippies were hard. Also "I've had better" was heard about the pulled pork roll. Not a good start unfortunately. The coffee was ok. Perhaps it has more going for it as a place for an after work drink |
Grantham Street Cafe - Wembley
4.5 / 5 We like this little spot for lunch although we usually have one of the all day breakfast options. Good coffee and good serivce. The parking is easy too. |
Raktacino - Salter Point
4.5/5 A favourite for a quick, tasty lunch with friendly service and good coffee. Havent been there for dinner or breakfast but will when the opportunity pops up |
Lo quay
5th November 2015 2/5 I don't know what all the fuss is about. Service was 46 minutes on a lunch order of quiche from the pie oven and chicken burrito. Coffee service was quicker. Over priced for what were basically light snacks |
