Theo and Co Pizzeria
We headed here for a quick dinner on Tuesday night. It was jam packed but it was school holidays so maybe that's why. We ordered the lamb pizza and the pepperoni deep dish. Both were delicious. The atmosphere is bright and the service was friendly. BYO as there is no alcohol sold there. |
Outback Jacks Bar and Grill
A quiet night out for adults only. We had a really interesting brushetta that was greasy and topped with BBQ sauce. I guess it holds with the steakhouse theme. Dinner was steaks that were OK but I can do at least as good at home and for a 10th of the price. The service was OK but not exceptional. I'm not sure I would go again ... |
V Burger Bar - East Victoria Park
Something different to Grill'd and just as good although I would avoid the greasy sides next time. He had the Aussie, junior had the American with bacon and I had the plain V. And FYI you can BYO. |
Satay on Charcoal
This was a quick dinner as we were runny late for Beccy Cole! We had the front page chicken satay sticks and some nasi goreng in an omelet and a beef rendang with rice. No complaints. The service was prompt and friendly. |
Chelsea Pizza Co
How good are the sculptures by the sea at Cott? But this review isn't about them ... Even though that's where we had been. Post viewing pizza, pasta and parmi on the way home. Chicken and mushroom pizza, penne with chorizo and Master 12 had a massive parmi. The place is busy with eat ins and take aways and the service is friendly and fast. A bit disappointing the chef couldn't do a child size parmi (more than half came home) but other than that a great way to end the working week. |
The Creamery
We just had icecream to take away in a waffle cone and usually that wouldn't warrant a review but there are two things I want to tell you. Firstly if you are lactose intolerant there are 5 options! That's 4 more than most places have. Blood orange, lemon, mango, strawberry and CHOCOLATE sorbet. He was very happy. The second thing is that the service was very friendly. Oh, and the price is extremely reasonable for great serve sizes and delicious icecream. |
The Woodpeckers
As planned we headed back for pizza. Oh my goodness it was so worth it. I've reevaluated my score and bumped these guys up. I rang ahead to make sure we could get a table and a pizza after 8.30 as we had been lost in the Ikea vortex that eats all your time. I was told no problem, the kitchen closes at 9 but you can stay until whenever. We fell through the door way after 8.30 and were seated and ordered without any fuss. Master 12 ordered spaghetti bol (I love a place that caters for kids) and we had two pizzas. One meat lovers that was perfect and fresh and tasty, and one creamy based extraordinary prosciutto with walnuts. Absolutely divine. Master 12s only complaint "I hate it when food tastes so good you eat so much you feel sick." |
Decanter
We were headed elsewhere until I said tapas and he remembered this place. Plans change and that's a fortunate thing in this case. We arrived to an almost empty restaurant (it was 6pm on Saturday) and left when the place was filling up considerably. The service was friendly and prompt and we ordered from a great menu with some diverse options. We chose cheese and bacon balls (yummy), pulled pork poutine, chicken with walnut salad and chicken waffles with a whiskey maple syrup. All of these were exceptionally presented and made choosing what to have first a little bit tricky. Washed down with beers the whole meal was lovely and a great experience. If I had a criticism it would be the music choice. For an American place music shouldn't be hard to sort out. I hope y'all enjoy eat here sometime. |
Golden Barbeque
I was given a treat, a night off from cooking and the associated cleaning, after a late run at baseball. I opted for a quick and easy dinner at Waterford where there is lots of cheap and good choice. We chose this place for no good reason and had a nice meal. The service was very quick and the meal was out quickly and hot and fresh. My criticisms are that the order of food was just as it was ready and there wasn't much meat in any of the dishes. We had the delicious San Choi Bow, spring rolls, Pad Thai (with scant prawns and chicken), beef satay with rice (same story with the beef) and the obligatory prawn crackers. All up, $42 for three people and The Piper can count on some income from the tooth fairy too ... |
Mom dumping
East Victoria Pk Maybe we are on a lucky streak but we seem to have hit a jackpot again. This was planned to be a quick and cheap dinner, early in the evening, before seeing the Lion King. It was both quick and cheap. We were there the day after Chinese New Year so perhaps that helped, with lots of staff on duty. It was busy even at 5.45 when we arrived. We ordered seafood noodles, sizzling chicken with cashews, spring rolls, veggie fried rice, and 5 each lamb, beef and veggie dumplings. Everything came out as it was ready so if you want things as entree before main, I suggest you say so when you order. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious. Our total bill? $68 for all that food that filled 4 hungry theatre goers. A great spot for a quick option that won't break the bank |
Makan 2 Cafe
Albany Hwy, Victoria Park I don't have any complaints. The food was fresh and hot. Junior had mi goreng and liked it. We shared mee mee noodles (average) and nasi goreng with lamb (yummo). The service was very quick and friendly. The place was over half full despite being 8.:00 on Thursday night (that's good for Perth). With drinks the total was $42. Like I said, no complaints. Cafe Gelato We just grabbed an icecream to go, in waffle cones of course. The selection is fabulous including mars bar, ferrero, bubble gum, the old faves like chocolate, vanilla and banana. Then there's sorbet for the lactose intolerant. I had caramel, he had strawberry sorbet and junior had banana. The place was busy busy busy and the young ladies serving were friendly and fast but didn't cut corners on the serve sizes or presentation. A lovely summer evening treat. |
Endeavour tavern
Gingin Rd, Lancelin Truth be known, all the good stuff comes from the location, location, location! This place claims to be the best beer garden in Australia and I think it probably is. We arrived in time for sunset and enjoyed a balmy hour or two with a meal and a mojito. We also had food but it was largely unremarkable and over priced. The boys shared a seafood basket and a kids chicken nugget basket. He had a pepper steak sandwich and I had a warm beef and noodle salad. The seafood and chippies are frozen and the salad was more noodles and lettuce than beef. The steak sandwich was the most satisfying meal but it's hard to get that wrong. Even the beer he had was flat. Would I go again? Of course! It's the best beer garden in Australia! Where else would you be on Australia Day? |
Guzman Y Gomez (GYG)
Beaufort St, Mt Lawley I would have to say I was totally unimpressed. I get that they are doing fast food but, for the price, I would expect a little more. Our plates (I use the word loosely) had stickers on them to prove our orders were correct which is a nice touch (not). The serve sizes were ok and service was quick but the food was only average and in fact mine was very salty. Lucky for good company. I won't be eating here again. |
A fish restaurant in a side street - Shinjuku
It feels like this whole trip has been about food and different experiences. We were searching specifically for a traditional sit-on-the-floor experience and wandered around asking different places. They offered us tables, which we politely declined, without understanding that they recess the tables into the floor so you sit on the floor on tatami mats but with your legs dangling into the recess, as though you are sitting at the table. Basically, what we were looking for. So, by chance we ended up at exactly what we wanted. Tables were scarce here but they bought us in out of the cold and gave the children snack packs that were devoured in moments. Our table was ready not too soon afterwards and, with our shoes off, we sat down to order from yet another menu we didn't understand. Despite this, we managed to order a delicious meal of dumplings, a salad, chicken skewers served 5 ways (one of which ways just crispy skin!!) and fried rice. Once again we encountered the seat charge but at least this time it was explained to us, along with the 8% tax, and our bill for 9 balanced perfectly, for our last meal in gorgeous Tokyo. |
Gyutan Tororo Mugi-meshi - Shinjuku - We fell into this restaurant after traipsing around Tokyo Disneyland all day. I had spotted it as we walked back from breaky and filed it as a possibility. The sheer number of eateries around the Keio Plaza Hotel makes picking and choosing a real challenge, but also means everything from food to karaoake and shopping is all in one place.
The menus here were in Japanese and so we set about deciding what to have. With the decision made we were offered English menus and realised we had entered a restaurant whose speciality is beef and ox tongue. Having grown up with British parents who maintained post-world war ways, I have had my fill of offal! So we reassessed our decisions and had the beef and potato hot pot plate and a smoky pork plate. The meal was delicious, served with incredibly fresh and tasty side salads and washed down with beers. Not a bad save at all! |
Nijyu Mara Oriental Market and Bistro - Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan
This was ou r first meal since breakfast time and couldn't come fast enough. Served with Asahi beers in huge glass we devoured everything in sight, including the entree we didn't order but later found out is a house dish that incorporates a standard seat charge. We shared a skewer dish (chicken skewers 5 ways) and a beef hotpot, while The Piper had a chicken and rice dish. We opted for dessert because they were intriguing and we were not sorry. The Newby ordered potato with ice cream (for dessert??) that was hand cut fries with a cinnamon sugar and vanilla bean ice cream. While it sounds strange, the combination was delicious. For my dessert I order the coffee jelly and silken tofu. This may be the best dessert I have ever eaten, despite losing half of it to The Newby :-( Chock full of three beers we headed off in search of karaoke ... |
Neiseko ramen - Hirafu, Niseko, Japan
This place is the place to go for noodles in town and certainly serves a good feast. However, be warned, it is small inside and the wait time is long. When you arrive you have to add your name to the list at the door and be inside when your name is called. We were 17th on the list and waited for well over an hour and a half. The waiting room is tiny and with snow falling from the sky and frozen ice under your feet you have no option but to join the sardine jam inside the door. While you wait you get to watch the other guest savouring their meals, warm inside the main restaurant. You also get an opportunity to read the caution sign and recall your ninjya skills. Fortunately we don't have a car, so caution two did not apply. Caution three remains a mystery although I suspect it goes something like this ... "The wait time is long so if you are hungry or cold have something form the vending machine". Eventually our table was ready and we scurried in the door to consider our feasting options. The Newby and I opted to share again and I chose the Nesiko Potato Ramen and our second dish was a clear ramen. I was torn between either stirring through the potato foam or eating it first but opted for the former. Yummo! Great choice and easily better than the clear ramen, although this was also a good dish. Washed down with hot sake, we were warm again. Was it worth the wait? When you go, let me know! |
Hans Cafe, Northbridge
3.5/5 It's no Wangs but then that's hard to beat. Another Western Australian icon and for convenience and speed of service Han's do well. The food was tasty and served all together. We had the beef curry and chicken with piles of cashews. I wouldn't order the entree again. They have a childrens menu that includes an Asian dish. Not a bad meal or experience for the price although I suspect a fair bit of MSG - we've consumed a lot of water since eating! |
Locanda - Melbourne
7th December 2015 4/5 Yes, I'm in Melbourne. I get around a bit (don't tell anyone). This is a work trip and the function was at Locanda. We had a separate area reserved just for us, somewhere around 25-30 people, with our own very attentive waitstaff. My squid was very oily, to the point where I couldn't finish it. My steak was very nice until the middle, which was a bit too red for me . The white chocolate dessert was very very fine! Overall though the dining experience was very good. |
Bravos - East Victoria Park
21st November 2015 4.5/5 Back to Bravos for dinner this time. Great to be recognised and thanked for coming back! Nice touch. Fabulous to be seated, without a reservation, in a full house! Super cocktails and entree followed by a divine pizza to share and decadent dessert plate. Service was faultless. Now to try it for breakfast. One thing I'd change - turn off the TV! |
Wangs - St James
All the time 5/5 This is our local and we love going back. The food is tasty, hot, fresh and served quickly. The staff are friendly and dont mind us taking the yahtzee dice or uno cards. The price is very reasonable and makes eating out with a few people very affordable. |
